New OSCAR trains are soon to replace the ageing DCM & DCT power cars and trailers. The order of extra OSCARs was placed in September 2009 to enter service a year later. These carriages have been in service since 1977. Along with these carriages is the retirement of the non air-conditioned suburban (and intercity) trains.
"The new carriages will be deployed to the South Coast, Blue Mountains and Newcastle & Central Coast lines, replacing older Intercity carriages, some of which have been in service since 1977" (CityRail website).
